A Railroad Legacy Driving the Future of Intermodal Logistics

Randy Bayles is a distinguished board member of the Containerization & Intermodal Institute (CII), where he plays an instrumental role in shaping the future of the transportation and logistics industry. With more than 40 years of experience in the transportation sector, Randy is deeply committed to advancing the goals of CII, particularly in fostering collaboration between different segments of the supply chain.

Before his retirement in 2024, Randy’s career spanned a broad array of roles, with notable positions at Yellow Freight Systems and Roadway Package Systems (now FedEx Ground). However, it was his 27 years at Norfolk Southern that truly solidified his expertise in the railroad industry and gave him a unique perspective on intermodal transportation. This experience, coupled with his leadership in various sectors of logistics, made Randy a natural fit for CII’s board.

“Joining CII was an opportunity to bring the railroad perspective into an organization that has such a profound influence on the entire supply chain," says Randy. "Rail is a cornerstone of intermodal transportation, and it was crucial for us to be part of the conversation on how to create more seamless, efficient supply chains.”

Recognizing the importance of rail in intermodal transportation and its crucial role in the future of global supply chains, Randy became an advocate for including the railroad perspective in CII’s conversations. His work on the board has been pivotal in ensuring that railroads are well-represented in discussions on supply chain optimization, sustainability, and innovation.

In addition to his board role, Randy has served on CII’s Nominating Committee, where he has played a key part in selecting and recommending candidates who will strengthen the organization’s leadership and further its mission. His experience in identifying talent and fostering diverse, forward-thinking leadership has been invaluable in ensuring CII remains a dynamic and inclusive community.

Beyond his role as a board member, Randy is passionate about mentorship and education. He is a strong proponent of CII’s focus on preparing the next generation of leaders in supply chain management. Through his involvement with scholarships, university partnerships, and outreach programs, Randy is working to ensure that young professionals are equipped with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in the increasingly complex world of transportation and logistics.

“As I look at the future of this industry, I’m excited by the talent that’s emerging. The next generation of supply chain leaders is incredibly smart, and they’re bringing a fresh perspective. My role is to help mentor them and pass on the lessons I’ve learned along the way,” says Randy.

Randy's role within CII is a reflection of his broader commitment to the industry. He sees his role as an opportunity to give back to the community that has shaped his career. He is particularly proud of his work in helping CII evolve into an inclusive, forward-thinking organization that drives innovation in global supply chains.

“CII is more than just a board; it’s a community. It’s a place where industry leaders from all sectors come together to solve the big challenges,” says Randy. “It’s an honor to be a part of it, and it’s exciting to be shaping the future of an industry that’s so critical to our global economy.”

In his post-retirement life, Randy remains deeply involved with CII, dedicating his time and expertise to advancing the organization’s mission. His work with CII is a continuation of his lifelong passion for transportation, and he remains steadfast in his belief that collaboration, education, and a focus on the future are the keys to the continued success and evolution of the industry.

“I’m still discovering what I’m passionate about in this next chapter of my life, but I know I want to continue making an impact, particularly with CII,” says Randy, “It’s a privilege to help shape the future of supply chains and pass the torch to the next generation of leaders.”

Randy’s legacy within CII is one of commitment, leadership, and a vision for a more connected and efficient transportation network. He is not only shaping the organization’s future but also contributing to the broader goals of the global supply chain community. As he continues his journey with CII, his dedication to the industry and its future remains unwavering.

“Ultimately, it’s about making the supply chain better for everyone—whether it’s more efficient, more sustainable, or more innovative. That’s what drives me every day, and that’s why I’m so excited to continue this work with CII,” says Randy.
